Welcome to the SVCS
Web Design SIG
Beginning in February 2007, WebSIG will welcome all persons who are interested in learning how to create, publish and maintain a website on the Internet. Unlike our more traditional SIGs, WebSIG will be primarily a tutorial session taught by SVCS webmaster Maurice Green. The level of material in the classes will be appropriate for beginners and intermediate level website creators. Several WYSIWYG editing programs will be demonstrated, but emphasis will be on the use of free and open source software for creating and maintaining the websites. Topics to be covered in the course include:
- Anatomy of a website
- Choosing a website hosting provider
- Setting up a local server for website testing
- Basic HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)
- Adding graphics and images to your website
- CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
- Using Javascript menus and actions
- Dynamic websites
- Building an online photo gallery
- Creating you own blog
- Bulletin boards and forums
- CMS (Content Management Systems) using MySQL databases and PHP
- Building an e-commerce site for online sales
- Search engine optimization (SEO) of your website
